Haggai 1:2-6

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’”Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

This passage is specific about our attitude towards the things of God. It is a sharp rebuke from the Lord for Israel’s neglect of the welfare of the house of the Lord. The house of the Lord can be viewed from two perspectives. First is the physical house of the Lord i.e. the temple where we worship.

The second perspective of the house of God refers to the people who worship in the physical structures. What burden do you carry for the welfare of the members of God’s family that fellowship in your assembly?

Sometimes we are quick to fix what is happening with the buildings, and often neglect what is happening to the people. Think about the state of Israel that prompted Nehemiah’s ministry of rebuilding - “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province and are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” God wants us to be positively committed to the totality of His house so His blessings we receive will not leak away.

1.      Thank God for the privilege of belonging to the family of God on earth; waiting to be raptured into the eternal kingdom of God.

2.      Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a genuine burden and commitment to the total welfare of the house of God.

3.     Father, I am grateful to You for accepting me as Your child. Please help me to be more committed to Your kingdom than I am now.

I set my affections on the house of God therefore I make God’s service my delight.  I renew my commitment to prayer for the family of God. By the grace of God, I dedicate my resources and my time to serve the house of God and the people of God in every way I can in the name of Jesus.
