In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.5 And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness cannot overcome it.
One of the prophecies concerning the coming of Jesus into the world stated that “the people that sit in darkness have seen a great light” True to those words, Jesus when He was on earth declared “I am the light of the World”. John picking up all the Scriptures summarized it all in today’s passage – the light shines in darkness and the darkness does not comprehend it. It means that the darkness cannot stand where the light prevails. Someone has rightly said that darkness prevails wherever the light goes away. It is light that drives darkness away and not the reverse.
Think of light in the spiritual realm. Jesus’ coming made humanity understand better many of the spiritual truths God has been teaching humanity generations before Jesus came. Think of the many times Jesus had to tell His listeners, “you have heard of old... but I say unto you”. Those statements clearly affirm that the world was in spiritual darkness before Jesus came. Jesus’ coming brought spiritual enlightenment on many issues.
The other truth that is often overlooked is that Jesus’ coming brought greater knowledge and understanding concerning the world God created and all that is in it. Think of the many inventions and discoveries that came into the world in AD, as compared to those the world saw in BC. It is amazing. Jesus’ coming truly brought light and ignorance gave way to knowledge.
1. Thank God for bringing His Son into the world to enlighten our world spiritually and naturally.
2. Ask for faith to trust the God of true Light and enablement to walk in the Light.
3. Father, please help me to no longer walk in darkness because of the light Jesus brought to our world.
I declare that as Jesus is the Light of the world, so am I a light of the world; because as He is so am l in this world. There is no longer darkness in me because I walk in the Light that is Christ. I am an agent of God to dispel darkness anywhere I go. I declare that because I walk in the Light wherever I go, darkness will flee in the name of Jesus.
